Discover Psalms – The “School of Prayer”!

“I would like to renew my call to everyone to pray the Psalms”

This four-week guided meditation will introduce you to the Psalms as “the school of prayer.”

Each weekday, you will receive an email that draws from material that I developed together with Jeff Cavins and Tim Gray for the Great Adventure Bible study on Psalms.

The first week, you’ll learn how to pray and meditate with the Psalms using lectio divina.  After that, each Monday you’ll receive a brief introduction to a particular type of Psalm, followed by a new Psalm each day to pray with.  On Fridays, we’ll prepare for that Sunday’s readings by considering them together with the responsorial psalm.  Every day, a single question will help you reflect on what you’ve read.

Why Study the Psalms?

We hear and read Psalms every time we go to Mass. At the heart of the Bible are the Psalms, prayers from God that help us learn to pray. The Holy Spirit inspired them.  Israel sang them.  Christ himself prayed them, as did our Blessed Mother. As a child learns to write by letting her parent guide her hand to form the words, so we can learn to pray by reading the Psalms.

Getting Ready

Praying Scripture daily is a wonderful way to grow close to God. Before you begin, it is important that you decide on a regular time and place. And be sure to pray before you read.  If you can choose a favorite Psalm to pray each day before you start, you’ll find it engraved upon your heart after a while, ready to spring to mind whenever you need it.

You might try the first part of Psalm 95, which is a Psalm of praise, or maybe Psalm 5:2-4 (NAB):

Give ear to my words, O LORD;
understand my sighing.
Attend to the sound of my cry,
my king and my God!
For to you I will pray, LORD;
in the morning you will hear my voice;
in the morning I will plead before you and wait.

Links will be provided to the daily readings, but looking them up in your own Catholic Bible will enhance your experience.

Finally, you might consider recording your thoughts and progress in a journal. You never know when looking back on what you’ve heard from God in the past, will bolster your faith going forward.

I’ll be reading and praying right along with you. May God bless you as you learn to pray with the Psalms!
